Now that I have completed the service learning placement for this class. All the things I thought about being a teacher and how rewarding being in the profession would be was all right. It just made certain that this is what I want to do. I got to see the good and the bad about being a teacher. I loved being around all of the kids and how amazing their energies was and their souls were. I love the idea of being able to change someones life for the better. If I can be the best part about someones day it makes my day. I love making people happy and I want to strive to do this as a teacher.  The service learning has definitely influenced my decision. It has made me fall in love with teaching even more. So many times we take teachers for granted. No one wants to be a teacher, it's a joke that they don't make any money at all. Even if teachers get paid poorly is true there is so much more reward to teaching than just money. I want to be able to look back on my life and know I made...

My experience with service learning has been really beneficial so far. I have had a lot of awesome opportunities in the classroom to teach and learn a lot about teaching. I have been connecting both the course learning with my service learning experiences. I really enjoy this course and being able to get real life experience as well. I have applied respecting the children into my service learning. I really love the children I get to work with. They are all so smart and so amazing. I have grown a really great appreciation for teachers all around the world. Taking this course and participating in service learning has just made me more certain the I want to be a teacher.  The blogging is defiantly a good way to keep track of my progress and be able to look back at how far I have come in the course and in my service learning. I was kinda scared going into the classroom, I have been in one before but never been serious about wanting to be a teacher so it felt different. My teacher...

In my service learning classroom I am only in during the end of class. During the end of class the subject that is being taught is reading. That is the main subject that I see being taught. I have had a lot of experience teaching reading because of this. Because I am only there for the reading section of the class, I don't see much of the other subjects being taught. But, I do know that a lot of time is spent describing and teaching how to read and stay alert and attentive while reading. The class is very trained and taught very well in that subject so I can assume that a lot of time is spent teaching this subject. I am not to sure what my teacher feels about standardized testing or standards. I do know though, that the teacher I am working with is very particular about the things she teaches. I think she follows the standards very well. This is only my assumption though. She makes teaching very fun for the kids while still being able to teach the standards. This is how I will lik...

In my service-learning classroom, there is a lot of diversity. There is this one kid in particular who is not from America. He does not know English very well and I am pretty sure he grew up in Mexico. The teacher is able to talk to him and she uses google translate to really try and understand. A lot of the times he makes comments in the classroom and she listens and makes the whole class listen as well, even though a lot of them don't understand him. This makes him feel seen and a part of the classroom, even though he is a part of a different culture.

In the class the I am doing my service hours in, there is a boy that can speak little to no English. I am able to help translate for him and the teacher. So far, it has been a really cool experience. He is very good at reading given his circumstances. He just needs some help with understanding what he is reading and learning the words in the English language. I commend him for his bravery and positive attitude coming into class everyday knowing he is going to have a hard time understanding what is going on and being so diverse from all the other children. One thing that really helps is the routine that is provided by the teacher. The Brown Vs. Board of Education definitely played part in making his situation possible. He is able to have the same opportunities as everyone else. I am really appreciative of this opportunity that is now available to everyone. I think everyone deserves these same opportunities and privileges. I am excited to work with more diverse children and be able ...

For my first example, My teacher I am working with sat all of her students down on the rug. She brought out props and a really cute detailed book. She started with the props and refreshed the class on how to read and remember what it is you are reading with the props. For example, she had really big ears and put them on, she then proceeded to tell the class how they need to listen to what they are reading and really try to understand it. She then, when through her book and named off all of the core sounds that are found in almost every word. The sounds had cute little pictures on them that represented the sound that the letters mad when you put them together. For example, there was the letter EW together and the letters had a picture of a kid grossed out in them. So the kids had something to associate the letters too.  One other example from my teacher, is that she works with the kids in individual reading groups specialized for the kids. She takes about an hour to meet with ...

1. The cooperative teacher I am working with lets the students make comments when they want about what they are doing as a class. She allows them to feel a sense of community and love in the classroom. She allows it so that the kids feel as though they matter and that they have a community of kids they can grow with.  2. There are clear routines that the teacher I am working with sets up for the kids, she has a scheduled time of when they learn about and do different things. For the time I come in to help in the classroom she has them working on the computers with activities to help them with reading and writing. Also, during that time she does reading centers for each level of readers.  3. The teacher I am working with gives positive reinforcement to the kids when they are doing the right things or we they complete a task. She makes sure their skills don't go unnoticed in the classroom. She is really good at making them feel really proud of themselves.
