In my service learning classroom I am only in during the end of class. During the end of class the subject that is being taught is reading. That is the main subject that I see being taught. I have had a lot of experience teaching reading because of this. Because I am only there for the reading section of the class, I don't see much of the other subjects being taught. But, I do know that a lot of time is spent describing and teaching how to read and stay alert and attentive while reading. The class is very trained and taught very well in that subject so I can assume that a lot of time is spent teaching this subject. I am not to sure what my teacher feels about standardized testing or standards. I do know though, that the teacher I am working with is very particular about the things she teaches.  In my service-learning classroom, there is a lot of diversity. There is this one kid in particular who is not from America. He does not know English very well and I am pretty sure he grew up in Mexico. The teacher is able to talk to him and she uses google translate to really try and understand. A lot of the times he makes comments in the classroom and she listens and makes the whole class listen as well, even though a lot of them don't understand him. This makes him feel seen and a part of the classroom, even though he is a part of a different culture.

So far, it has been a really cool experience. He is very good at reading given his circumstances. He just needs some help with understanding what he is reading and learning the words in the English language. I commend him for his bravery and positive attitude coming into class everyday knowing he is going to have a hard time understanding what is going on and being so diverse from all the other children. One thing that really helps is the routine that is provided by the teacher. The Brown Vs. Board of Education definitely played part in making his situation possible. He is able to have the same opportunities as everyone else. I am really appreciative of this opportunity that is now available to everyone. I think everyone deserves these same opportunities and privileges. I am excited to work with more diverse children and be able ...
